When you know a move is coming, it is always a good idea to start planning. At Westheimer Transfer & Storage we have put together some useful tips on how to make your next move a little bit smoother. You will want to get started on this list as soon as possible, in order to give yourself enough time to get everything done as efficiently as possible.

Create a Packing Schedule:

Make a list of everything that needs to be packed. You can do this by putting your house into sections or you can pack items by necessity of using them. For example, you can pack away clothing you will not need this season before you pack away clothing you will use on moving day. This will reduce stress by showing you how much you need to get done each day.

Cancel Utilities/Set Up New Services

Your utility company will want a heads up that you are leaving. When you call your utilities, they will set up a service cut-off date which will mean you are no longer responsible for services. Be careful when you schedule these services, you may need lights and water for moving day. It is also recommended that you set up your new services as soon as you know your move in date.

Clean Out Your Excess Food

Try your best to plan dinners around what you already have in your home. The goal is to eat as much of your food as possible so you do not have to pay anyone to help you move it. Try setting up a meal plan with items you have in your fridge and pantry or you can always donate food that will not make it through your long-distance move.

Make a Plan for Your Pets and Children

It is very difficult to move with pets that may escape or children that can wander off around. If possible, we highly recommend you arrange for child or pet care for your small dependents. This will help reduce your stress. If you figure this out far ahead of moving, you will not be worried about it the day before your next move.

Get Set Up with a Moving Company

Moving companies are always busier during the summer months because families like to move when school is out. You may also run into issues if you are trying to move during the holidays and there is not a lot of staffing. Try to book your moving date as soon as you have your moving day. This will give your moving company as much time as possible to plan. When you are ready to start your next residential move, call Westheimer Transfer & Storage. We would love to set you up with an in-home consultation and estimate.
